This Week in Secondary School

We hope you enjoy the upcoming extended family weekend. While students and family are enjoying time together, ISY teachers and staff will be engaged in professional learning.

A few things of note: 

Transitioning: This past weekend Middle School Science and Secondary Music have transitioned into the new facility. We have only a few more rooms remaining before the transition to the new facility is complete. After the holiday we will be looking to transition teachers from the houses to building G and F.  Each week we are getting closer to being moved. We are transitioning slowly in order to ensure that student learning is not impacted.

Google Guardian Summaries: Thank you to those who provided feedback regarding Google Guardian Summaries. If you have yet to provide feedback, please take a moment to complete the quick questions (link). Those who have indicated on the survey that they did not receive the Google summary or are having difficulties please contact the office so that we can provide assistance.

May Exam Week - The May exam week has been moved to May 1-5, 2017 to accommodate our SAT test takers. Please see the link to the May exam schedule. The end of the year exam is a summative assessment where students have an opportunity to demonstrate what they have learned throughout the school year. The exams take place at the beginning of May to allow teachers the opportunity to assess students’ long-term learning and provide feedback. The timing of the exam allows teachers time to introduce a final unit before the end of the year which will be assessed and included in the quarter four report card. As high school students progress through the years, learning how to study for cumulative exams is imperative, as at the end of grade 12, all students take IB exams which assess two years of academic content.

Music: In an effort to assist students who have medium to large instruments for music class, we will trial the following: Each morning students will be encouraged to leave their instruments in a bin near the elevator.  At 7:55 AM the bin will be moved to music level 3. At 2:50 PM the bin will be moved from level 3 to level 1.  If students have not deposited the instrument by 7:55 AM or 2:50 PM they will need to carry their instrument to and from the music room.

Swimming Pool Usage:  This week you will receive information about the ISY pool usage, ASA activities and open swim time for the community. We look forward to being able to share this exciting information with you shortly.

We look forward to welcoming you into the new Sports, Arts and Science (SAS) Building this week with the upcoming Parent-Teacher Conferences on Monday, March 20, 2017, from 12:00-5:00 and Tuesday, March 21, 2017, from 11:00 - 7:00 PM. Just a reminder that with the opening of the new facility, some teacher conference locations have been adjusted. Please refer to the room location chart at this link.

The Sports Arts and Science Building is Now Open:

Last week, excitement was in the air as the secondary students for the first time accessed the new facility.  Over the next few months, we will continue to slowly move into the new building, and we look forward to having our parent teacher conferences where you can visit the new classrooms in just a few short weeks.

Celebrating Women's day
On Friday at 7:00 AM ISY Secondary School will celebrate Women's days on the upper deck of the new facility.

Google Classroom Guardian Summary:  
This week you will be sent an email asking you to accept an offer for google Guardian summary. Accepting the invitation will allow you to see your child's assignments or task.  It is a step forward in helping parents better understand what is happening in their child's education.

A few things to note:

• Parent teacher conferences are accessible to be scheduled. Please make sure to sign up for conferences. Link to conference sign-up 
• Quarter 3 report cards will be available on Thursday, March 16, 2017

As permission for the new facility has been granted, we will begin to slowly relocate classes into the new facility. In order to ensure a smooth transition, we will take our time in transitioning the students and classes.  Our goal is to move as quickly and smoothly as possible.

Grade 12 Mock Exams - Exams begin next Wednesday,  March 8, 2017.  Exams will take place in the new facility. Our goal is to allow students the opportunity to be familiar with the testing room before the IB exams. Mock exam schedule can be found by following this link. If students are sick during Mock Exams, he/she must have a Doctors note or he/she will not be able to take the Make-Up exam. 

• End of Quarter 3 -  Grades will be available on INSIS on March 16, 2017.  
• Parent-teacher conferences will take place on Monday, March 20, 2017, and Tuesday, March 21, 2017.  Parents will be able to sign up for conferences through INSIS starting Wednesday, March 8, 2017.
