Dear Parents,

Thank you for those who attended the workshop last week on Building a Culture of Compassion by Peter Dalglish. I hope your child shared with you what they learned in the presentation/workshop. During his limited time here Peter has inspired our students and as a result, they have been sharing with us their passion and desire to make a difference. Our goal at ISY is to develop a service learning program that is cohesive, diverse and available to all students.  Over the next few weeks, we will be meeting with students to see how we can take their passion and motivation and together to make a meaningful impact in our local community.

Please note that on Friday the secondary school will be filled with team spirit as we celebrate Olympiad. This year Olympiad will take place on the ISY campus, making good use of our new facilities. Keeping with our tradition, the secondary school students will be dismissed 11:30.

MAP testing for a new Winter session to track and use student growth data since August will be from Jan. 23-31. Students in grades 6-9 will take the MAP assessments in the areas of math, reading, language, and science. The best preparation for these assessments is plenty of sleep and a well-nourished body. For more information about the MAP assessment and what it measures, please navigate to the ISY website and scroll down the page to the "MAP Growth" drop-down menu:http://www.isyedu.org/learning/assessment.

Given the adaptive nature of the MAP Growth assessment, students may be exposed to questions containing concepts or skills they have never seen before or have never received instruction on in order to find out what they can and cannot do. When this happens, students are guided to make an initial effort to answer these questions, but if they do not know the answer within a few minutes, they should make the best guess and move on. The MAP assessment is not intended to measure students spending large chunks of time on questions trying to “teach” themselves. Therefore, ISY will limit MAPassessment sessions to 90 minutes which is beyond the average time students take complete each session as published by NWEA.* *Students with an Individual Education Plan (IEP) may have extra time to complete assessments.

January 8, 2018

Dear Parents,

Welcome to the new year. I am hopeful that your holiday has been enjoyable and restful. The first week back in the new year and the Middle School has the secondary campus all to themselves as our high school students are off on their WWW adventures.  Please see the departure and arrival schedule for HS WWW below.  If you have any questions about WWW please contact the secondary office at secondaryoffice@isyedu.org. Please note, I will be away on a WWW adventure and will not be in the office next week.

Over the holiday while many of us were relaxing, the campus was buzzing with activity. The next time you are on campus you will note that our upper court has been renovated. The renovated space is now close to a full basketball court size space and will allow for an increase in covered area for student activities.

This semester we are welcoming ten new students into the secondary school.

Semester one ends on January 19, 2018, and families can anticipate report cards to be available on January 27, 2018.

Have a great end to your holiday, we look forward to welcoming back our students and families.
