A New Initiative in Secondary to Help Parents be Connected and Informed

In keeping with our Secondary goals of increasing collaboration and the use of meaningful technology, we are excited to announce the long-awaited Google Guardian Summary, which will be available to ISY Secondary parents the week of March 10, 2017. 


Guardian Summary allow parents to stay informed of what is happening in your child's classes without having to ask them to physically show you their computer. As with any new initiative, the next few months will be used to refine and structure the process. To help with this, we will be requesting your ongoing feedback.
 
Guardian email summaries will include a listing of the following:
  • Missing work: Work that’s late at the time the email was sent
  • Upcoming work: Work that’s due today and tomorrow or the upcoming week.
  • ​​Class activity: Announcements, assignments, and questions recently posted by teachers


​Guardian email summaries will not include:
  • Grades or student progress
  • Links or attachments
  • Two-way communication

Identified areas to be aware of:

  • The summaries are brief and will contain abbreviations. We will provide a list of well-used abbreviations, but the list may not be exhaustive.
  • Not all classes will post with the same frequency. Instead of imposing an artificial quantity of required posts, teachers will post as frequently as necessary.
  • Not all posts will make complete sense to you as parents. The announcements and assignments are designed to communicate with students. The goal of the guardian summary is to provide "conversation starters" for parents to be able to ask better questions and develop a deeper understanding as to what is occurring in class.
  • Students can select the done button next to an assignment even if the assignment has not been submitted giving the appearance that the work was submitted.
  • Long term projects will only appear in the summary one week from the deadline date.
Parent Education:
  • In the upcoming weeks, Mr. Hallwood, Technology Facilitator, will be emailing additional information and guidance to parents to ensure a smooth transition.
  • Morning information session will take place on March 1, 2017, at 8:45 AM after the PA coffee in the cafeteria.
  • Individual training and explanations are available to parents upon request.
